Cleaning Tips and caring for your rings

In case you are wondering how to look after your ring, we have included a few cleaning tips and notes on how to take care of your jewellery.

Cleaning tips and care of your jewelleryThe best way to keep your rings and other jewellery in tip top condition is to clean them occasionally with a dedicated cleaning cloth. These can be bought from any reputable jeweler or via Amazon. A cleaning solution can also be used if the item becomes tarnished or in severe cases an ultrasonic tank may be the best remedy. You can either buy one of these or take your item/s to a jeweller for professional cleaning. This is especially important for silver as it tends to become discoloured if not worn regularly.

Never use an abrasive cleaner or cream as these tend to scratch the surface and leave deposits in any crevices.

How to store your jewellery

All jewellery should be kept in an airtight container or sealed plastic bag in a dry place. Never leave or keep your items in the bathroom or other place of high humidity.

Green/black stains on your skin or jewellery.

Silver and some low quality gold can become discolored and even stain your skin and clothing. This is not a fault of gold or silver but caused by other metals which may be present in your jewellery. Most precious metals are mixed with a small percentage of other elements to form an alloy. You can read more about that at our hallmark section.

Tarnishing can also occur when your jewellery is exposed to some detergents, cleaning solutions and especially swimming pools. Some foods containing sulphur such as eggs can also have an effect. Simply exposure to the air will sometimes cause some discoloration.

Regular maintenance and cleaning tips for all your jewellery

Even the cheapest fashion ring can benefit from regular cleaning but you must be careful. Costume and fashion jewellery is often plated either with a precious metal or even chromium. For this reason it is unadvisable to use any abrasive cleaner as the plating can easily be rubbed off. Simply cleaning with a soft cloth is enough to keep your item looking bright and clean. However, don’t overdo it. Even through normal use the plating will eventually be worn off however thick it may be.

For this reason any costume jewellery should be treated very carefully and only used occasionally if you expect it to last a long time. Storage is very important and all items should be kept in a dry place and in an airtight container. This way you should get many years use out of even the cheapest ring.
